There are nine awards for reporting and writing available for the following, Arts and Entertainment, Business, Civic Affairs, Climate Action, Indigenous Affairs, Legal Affairs, Social Justice, Sports, Commentary. 19-ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT – The selected stories shall demonstrate excellence, creativity, and journalistic merit in the presentation of an arts and entertainment story. Two separate entries per journalist may be submitted. Each entry should be accompanied by a short explanation of the story and how it developed. Details should include the story’s chronology and circumstances affecting its gathering and presentation as well as the resources (money/time) available to complete.

20-BUSINESS – The entry may be a single story or a body of work on the same topic, consisting of not more than three pieces. The selected stories shall demonstrate excellence, creativity, and journalistic merit in the presentation of a business story. Two separate entries per journalist may be submitted. Each entry should be accompanied by a short explanation of the story and how it developed. Details should include the story’s chronology and circumstances affecting its gathering and presentation as well as the resources (money/time) available to complete.

21-CIVIC AFFAIRS – The entry may be a single story or a body of work on the same topic, consisting of not more than three pieces. The selected civic affairs stories shall demonstrate excellence, creativity, and journalistic merit in the presentation of a story related to municipalities, communities, and neighbourhoods. Two separate entries per journalist may be submitted. Each entry should be accompanied by a short explanation of the story and how it developed. Details should include the story’s chronology and circumstances affecting its gathering and presentation as well as the resources (money/time) available to complete.

22-CLIMATE ACTION – The entry may be a single story or a body of work on the same topic, consisting of not more than three pieces. The selected climate action stories shall demonstrate excellence, creativity, and journalistic merit in the presentation of a climate action story (of, or related to, climate crisis and the environment). Two separate entries per journalist may be submitted. Each entry should be accompanied by a short explanation of the story and how it developed. Details should include the story’s chronology and circumstances affecting its gathering and presentation as well as the resources (money/time) available to complete.

23-INDIGENOUS AFFAIRS – The entry may be a single story or a body of work on the same topic, consisting of not more than three pieces. The selected stories shall demonstrate excellence, creativity, and journalistic merit in the presentation of a story relating to Atlantic Canadian First Nations communities. Two separate entries per journalist may be submitted. Each entry should be accompanied by a short explanation of the story and how it developed. Details should include the story’s chronology and circumstances affecting its gathering and presentation as well as the resources (money/time) available to complete.

24-LEGAL AFFAIRS – The entry may be a single story or a body of work on the same topic, consisting of not more than three pieces. The selected stories shall demonstrate excellence, creativity, and journalistic merit in the presentation of a legal affairs story (of, or relating to, the courts, and legal cases and decisions of public interest). Two separate entries per journalist may be submitted. Each entry should be accompanied by a short explanation of the story and how it developed. Details should include the story’s chronology and circumstances affecting its gathering and presentation as well as the resources (money/time) available to complete.

25-SOCIAL JUSTICE – The entry may be a single story or a body of work on the same topic, consisting of not more than three pieces. The selected stories shall demonstrate excellence, creativity, and journalistic merit in the presentation of a social justice story that highlights systemic inequities encountered by marginalized or underrepresented communities or individuals. Two separate entries per journalist may be submitted. Each entry should be accompanied by a short explanation of the story and how it developed. Details should include the story’s chronology and circumstances affecting its gathering and presentation as well as the resources (money/time) available to complete.

26-SPORTS – The selected stories shall demonstrate excellence, creativity, and journalistic merit in the presentation of a story from the field of sports. Two separate entries per journalist may be submitted. Each entry should be accompanied by a short explanation of the story and how it developed. Details should include the story’s chronology and circumstances affecting its gathering and presentation as well as the resources (money/time) available to complete.

27-COMMENTARY – Entrants must be full time journalists, or freelance journalists. Only one entry may be submitted per journalist and must be a single entry, not a series. This entry displays outstanding editorial comment. It may be analytical, interpretive, or humorous, or a combination of such qualities. Each entry should be accompanied by a short explanation of the story and how it developed.
